Drawing on his experience managing multi-cultural projects, including 10 years in China, Mr. Porter will share his experiences and lessons learned with respect to the impact of culture on project management..
Bio: Tim Porter joined the faculty of George Mason University in 2010 where he is Assistant Professor in the School of Management teaching undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of operations management, project and program management, and strategic planning and portfolio management. From 2001 to 2010, Mr. Porter lived in China where he was involved in a variety of activities. For more than 6 years he was a consultant and later General Manager for Global Services at a prominent Chinese software company and played a key role in expanding business outside of China. He was responsible for implementing industry best practices throughout the company to support global operations for clients in the United States, Europe and Asia. For 3 years, he was a professor of software engineering and project management at one of China’s top universities. Mr. Porter is a student of Chinese culture and business practices, and speaks Mandarin. Prior to living in China he worked at Science Applications International for nearly 20 years, where his responsibilities ranged from programmer to Corporate Vice President with responsibility for major programs. His project portfolio included many international projects in a variety of countries including Turkey, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Venezuela.
